Study for recycling flexible plastics from hospitals

April 13, 2018

The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC) has begun a project to determine best practices for recycling multi-material flexible plastics from hospitals.

Up to 60 percent of plastics generated by healthcare facilities is flexible material, composed of unrecyclable multi-material laminates. Our current recycling systems do not have the technology to process such materials.

In a press release, HPRC stated that this project will examine the physical properties of the materials when processed with different types of compatibilizers applied in different concentrations. A better understanding of these properties will lead recyclers to discover opportunities to compound these materials with other products for resale markets.

2,000 pounds of flexibles are to be collected from hospitals for testing. Plastics will be extruded and injection-molded before tested and analyzed. Results are expected to be delivered by mid-summer.
