Indian state Maharashtra bans certain types of plastics and implements a DRS

Maharashtra, India's second most populous state is banning certain types of disposable plastic. A plastic ban has been introduced in the state through the Maharashtra Plastic and polystyrene Products (Manufacture, Usage, Sale, Transport, Handling and Store) Notification, 2018, which was published under the Maharashtra Non-biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 2006.
It was recently announced that the plastics ban was to be extended to the sale and manufacture of PET bottles. The Government issued the final notification on the ban on plastic carrier bags, plastic and polystyrene cutlery at the end of March.
The notification mentions extended producer responsibility to ensure that there is a take back system for plastic waste through a deposit return scheme. Consumers will have to pay an extra deposit on PET bottles that are 0.5 litre and 1 litre which will be returned to them once they take the bottle back to the retailer.
