Overview of Global Battery Requirements

The EU Battery Directive and its amendments require Member States to set up systems for separate treatment of regulated batteries (i.e., those exceeding the specified thresholds of heavy metals). It also sets design requirements for these types of batteries.

While the EU Directive is limited in scope, please note that it is currently under revision and the scope will likely be expanded to cover all battery types.

In North America and Asia, many juridictions have unique battery requirements. These include heavy metals limits, testing requirements, registration and reporting requirements, and labeling & information requirements.

Throughout the world, many countries impose fees or taxes on batteries.
