RoHS/WEEE Design Requirements

Over the past few years, the EU's Directive on the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2002/95/EC, commonly known as the RoHS Directive) has been a major driver for electronics design initiatives.

However, while the primary focus of the Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2002/96/EC, or the WEEE Directive ) is the product end-of-life (collection/recycling/disposal), this directive also has implications for the design of electrical/electronic equipment.

In addition, legislation that would impact the design of electronics has been passed or proposed in other jurisdictions, such as China, Japan, and certain US states.
