Background | What the Training Covers | Chinese-Language Training | Classroom Training in Europe
Walmart – the world's largest retailer - launched the Sustainable Packaging Scorecard on February 1, 2008 to all Product Suppliers for the United States market. The global Walmart buyers will use the packaging scorecard to rate suppliers on their progress toward developing sustainable packaging, as well as a tool when making purchasing decisions. An international roll out plan for UK has been announced by Walmart and is expected to be implemented in the third quarter of 2009. All suppliers that sell to Walmart UK will need to begin using the scorecard upon implementation.
EPI, with 10 years experience in global environmental packaging and product stewardship, has been working with many of Walmart's major suppliers to help them meet the packaging scorecard requirements. EPI has also been recommended by Walmart & Sam's to assist the packaging suppliers and brand owners with their scorecard needs (data entry, auditing, supply chain management, etc.).
Two informative webcasts are available which focus on teaching participants how to efficiently enter packages into the Sustainable Packaging Scorecard and use related technologies to improve product packaging. These webcasts are aimed at packaging engineers, marketing and design executives and sales and account executives for all direct Walmart USA or Sam's Club USA suppliers and companies that supply Walmart USA or Sam's Club USA suppliers.
Session (I) includes an overview of the Sustainable Packaging Scorecard and Walmart's environmental efforts. You will learn methods for collecting packaging information, calculating answers for the Scorecard, and entering packages into the Scorecard.
Session (II) explains how the Scorecard calculates scores and how Walmart buyers use Scorecard results to make more informed purchasing decisions. You will see a review of the reports available to Walmart buyers and understand how your data is used. You will also learn about using the Package Modeling software and its Packaging Source function to improve package scores and find new suppliers.
The classroom training covers the content of both web sessions (1 and II).

In 2008, EPI and ECRM developed a Mandarin language training curriculum to meet the needs of Walmart's considerable Chinese supplier base. EPI and ECRM successfully conducted many scorecard web trainings. Many of the vendors who attended the training found the training extremely helpful (see reviews).
Due to the large demand for the scorecard training, on September 2008, we also conducted several classroom trainings in Shenzhen China . More than 50 companies have attended the trainings and gave us very positive feedback.
An international Scorecard roll out plan for China is expected to be implemented in 2009. All the suppliers that sell to Walmart China will need to begin using the Scorecard upon implementation. We are planning to conduct more classroom trainings in China in 2009. For information on Chinese-language training and schedules, see ECRM's International Training site. You can register for the training directly from this site.
EPI and the Walmart Packaging Scorecard software developer, ECRM, have developed a Sustainable Packaging Scorecard training program for European suppliers to help companies in Europe learn how to efficiently enter packaging data into the scorecard and to be prepared for the upcoming scorecard international roll out.
EPI hosted a classroom training in Brussels, Belgium on March 19, 2009. The workshop was held in conjunction with the European Packaging Waste Law Conference (17-19 March) , which focused on “The Future of Packaging Policy in Europe and the Role of Sustainable Packaging and Waste Prevention”.
Future trainings will be scheduled in the future based on demand. We encourage all European Walmart suppliers who sell products to any Walmart location worldwide, to register.
The training will be conducted in English and will include the following information:
Understanding the role of the scorecard and international rollout in UK .
Calculating answers for data entry.
Efficiently entering packages into the scorecard.
Understanding how scores are calculated.
Proactively finding ways to improve package scores.
