Battery Takeback Requirements

The EU Battery Directive enables the Member States to use economic instruments to ensure recycling and proper disposal of batteries and accumulators. The EU Directive does not require producer-funded battery waste take-back.

Some countries however have passed more stringent laws, which cover a wider scope of batteries, and/or require that producers take-back battery waste that they put on the market. Laws in approximately 15 countries include recovery/fee obligations for all batteries.

Battery take-back systems are also in place in certain Asian and North American markets.

  • EPI can provide guidance on selecting battery types and designs that will minimize your fee burden
  • EPI can help you simplify compliance with reporting and fee requirements by using customized reporting databases.
